Assistance with your Waste Management Contribution obligations

Placing packaging on the market? Then you will have to deal with the Waste Management Contribution from Verpact. The rules vary depending on the situation. There are various taxed streams with their own obligations, Single Use Plastics and Tariff Differentiation plastic. Discover what this means for your organization.

What are Verpact and the Waste Management Contribution?

Verpact is the organization in the Netherlands responsible for collecting the waste management contribution for packaging. The waste management contribution stems from the extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging. This means that companies that place packaging on the market must finance the processing of packaging waste. Verpact does this centrally for the entire Dutch business community.

Companies that place packaging on the market must report annually how much packaging material they use. Based on this data, the waste management contribution is determined, which is then used for recycling and waste management.

Until 2026, you must register if you are liable to pay contributions in a year for:

  • More than 50,000 kg of packaging that you place on the market and/or dispose of upon import;
  • Packaging that falls under the Single Use Plastic (SUP) directive or under the deposit system.

From 2027, this threshold of 50,000 kg will be removed in connection with the PPWR, and you must file a declaration from the first kg of packaging for which you are liable to pay contributions.

The legislation applies to a wide range of companies, from producers and importers to brand owners, wholesalers and retailers. There is a good chance that you fall or will fall under the obligations.
